INSTALLATION OF aXis2000 (file: install.txt 04-Feb-06)

A. For Microsoft Windows operating systems

The axis.ini file must be adapted to your computer and prefernces.
in the computer it is run on before the code will execute (SEE BELOW !!!).

Note that the appearance of the widget depends on the settings of your graphics driver.
On Windows-95 systems these are accessible by right-clicking on the main screen and
changing "Settings". On my machines I find the best Windows95 graphic settings are:
size: 1024x768 ; color 256 color; fonts: small font .
Color schemes greater than 256 do not work properly.

1. Start IDL 6.x. In the FILES menu, select 'Preferences'

  click on the 'Path' tab:
add c:\aXis2000 and click on check box to include subdirectories
move c:\aXis2000 to the top of the list of folders to check

click on the 'Startup' tab and set:
IDL Main Directory c:\RSI\IDL61 [or wherever your IDL code is)\
        Working Directory c:\aXis2000
        Startup file axis2000_batch

Axis2000_batch.pro is a file which loads all necessary scripts and then runs the program.

change any other IDL preferences you wish, and close down IDL.
The next time you start up IDL aXis2000 should start automatically

2. The axis.ini file in the standard distribution may not be correct for your computer configuration
Typically, the items that need to be adjusted are:
     Source code lcoation (I recommend c:\aXis2000 !!)
     Size multiplier
command to run Adobe Reader (to allow use of the aXis2000 Help file)
command to run Internet viewer (to allow access to info sources of X-ray microscopes)

INSTRUCTIONS FOR UPGRADING FROM THE WEB SITE (http://unicorn.mcmaster.ca/aXis2000.html)
______________________________________________________________________________________
1) download the new version as the ZIP file
2) rename the folder of your old version: e.g. c:\aXis2000 to c:\aXis2000-yyyy_mm_dd
3) make a new folder for the new aXis: e.g. c:\aXis2000
4) UnZip the new version into that folder - be sure to click in 'Use folder names' !!
5) copy the aXis.ini file from c:\aXis2000-yyyy_mm_dd to c:\aXis2000

6) Launch IDL and you should have the new system in place !!

B. For Unix (X-windows) based systems ******* Not TESTED ON UNIX/LINUX SYSTEMS SINCE ~2000 !

Since Unix is case sensitive, it is important that the lower case of the names of the files
be preserved. I have set up this version so that all file names are strictly LOWER CASE.
Some FTP programs force the file names to upper case which is a problem.
If you have error messages saying a given pro file cannot be found please check the case
of the filename and rename it to exactly what the IDL error reports.
Use ASCII transfer for all files (except axis.bmp, axis.doc, axis.pdf, and
the *.gif files associated with the stack codes, which must be transferred in binary mode)
when transferring code from Windows95 to UNIX or Macintosh systems to avoid problems with
the differences in end-of-line coding in the 3 systems.
- the UNIX version of IDL only likes @bsif_com or @axis_com in the AXIS.PRO file.
On the Linux-PC version the batch processing would not work when long names such as
axis_com.mon are used for include files. The COMMON include files are now:
	axis_com.pro
	aligncom.pro
	analcom.pro
	bsif_com.pro
- The stack codes which are located in the same subdirectory as the rest of the axis code
differ significantly from those currently being supplied by Chris Jacobsen on his Web site.
These codes are based on his Jun-98 version of the stack widgets, with APH enhancements.

C. For McIntosh systems

In ~2000-01, Carl Zimba worked extensively on this code using McIntosh as the platform.
At that time all features worked, and switches needed to adapt to windows or McIntosh were in place.
since then new codes have not been checked for compatibility with nay Mac OS.
