Reflection Electron Energy Loss SpectrometerThe reflection electron energy loss spectrometer (REELS) is one of a number of surface analysis tools built into a general purpose UHV surface analysis system. We have a long standing project to explore the basic physics of inner shell excitation by REELS in order to optimize it as a lab-based alternative to synchrotron NEXAFS of surface adsorbates. For the past 4 years the system has been used to study passivation of semiconductors (Cl/Ge, S/InP etc) using LEED, Auger and thermal desorption techniques. An electrochemical cell for deposition of Cl at sub-monlayer levels is available.
